The Pamir Highway

The Pamir Highway

This highway traverses the Pamir Mountains as it snakes through the highlands of Tajikistan; starting in Northern Afghanistan, and coming to an end near the Kyrgyzstan/Uzbekistan border some 800 miles later. It is known as the second highest international highway in the world - reaching a peak of nearly 16,000 feet above sea level. (For you Top Gear fans, Clarkson & Co reached 17,000 feet before having to turn back due to a lack of breathable oxygen in the air!)

The Pamir Highway is part of the original Silk Road trade route, an extensive interconnected network of trade routes across the Asian continent connecting East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean world, as well as, North and East Africa and Europe. The Silk Road gets its name from the lucrative Chinese silk trade, which began during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), and was the major reason for the connection of trade routes into an extensive trans-continental network .

Construction and maintenance levels vary substantially along the the highway. The roadway sometimes paved but often unpaved, and heavily damaged in places by erosion, earthquakes, landslides, and avalanches. However, it is the only continuous route through the difficult terrain
