The Mongol Rally is very much a personal trial; there is only a single check point along the way (well, check point/party, aka. the Czech Out Party), a couple of days into the adventure. For the remainder though, we're on our own. With no Mongol Rally officials to hold our hands through the tough times, and no backup crews to celebrate the good times, it really is just James, Will & Mackey in a small family car in the middle of no-where!
Enter, GoSim! These fantastic guys sell Roaming International Simcards. For the regular folk, this is a sim card that gets popped into your phone, and allows for some pretty interesting calling options when abroad.
When taking a regular simcard (be it on Vodafone, O2, Orange etc), you're usually stung for roaming charges, and international rates. These are usually horrific - enough to bankrupt a man after a 10 minute chat in Kyrgyzstan. GoSim, however, do some clever things with something or someone in Estonia (I think Satellites are involved as well, possibly a little magic), and the end result is this: You can make very low cost calls from all the countries the average Mongol Rally team will traverse (including the 'stans), and recieving a call is absolutely free. Not only that (it get's better), your jealous friends and worrying family can call you for just 4 pence per minute from a BT Landline.
That's some ridiculously good pricing there.
We explained to GoSim about our challenge, and they were happy to prove their product, and how awesome it is, by providing us each with a GoSim roaming simcard, and some cheeky credit on top! Without sounding overly biased (as we now love GoSim), James did research the international simcard very well; comparing the top 5 providers by price, coverage and other bits and bobs (such as free recieving calls in lots of countries) - GoSim really did come out on top. Click the banner below to find out more about what they offer, especially if you're a Mongol Rally team or anyone who ventures away from our wet little rock once in a while.
